Anna was born on July 2, 1919 north of Zap, ND to Martin and Anna (Knittle) Weidner. She was raised and educated two miles north of Zap. On February 13, 1938, she married Philip Frei at her parent’s home due to a snow storm. The couple resided on the Frei ranch throughout most of their married years until moving into Halliday in 1987. Philip passed away on January 22, 2002 after nearly 64 years of marriage.
Anna was well-known for her caring heart, her gift of storytelling, helping others, and her quick wit and one-liners. It was a cold day when anyone could pull one over on Anna. She loved to garden and quilt, making numerous quilts for her family. She had a passion for cooking, especially fleishkueckla, and entertaining anyone who came to her door and no one ever left hungry. She also enjoyed playing cards, especially a German card game, Duroch, and playing marbles. Above all else, Anna loved to spend time with her family.
Anna was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Halliday, the German’s from Russia singing group, and quilted with the church quilting group.
Anna is survived by her children, Marylene (Delmer) Weidner of Killdeer, ND, Loucinda Martin of Salida, CO, Ronald (Milda) Frei of Beulah, Larry (Sarah) Frei of Halliday, Carol (Lawrence) Sitter of Minot, ND, Lynnae (Harlon) Weidner of Beulah, Susan (Richard) Pelton of Killdeer; one son-in-law, Richard Engwicht of Judson, ND; one daughter-in-law, Marlene Frei of Bismarck; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and two special friends, Ida and Clarence Rohde of Halliday.
