As with their last game, against Watford City, they knew they had an uphill battle.

But this time the results were not as good, with the Cowboys losing 48–35.

“We knew coming into the game that they (Shiloh Christian) were going to be a well-coached, discipline team,” Coach Andy Murphy said. “While in high school (at Trinity), I played against a Coach Dwyer led Shiloh basketball team.

“I knew that we were going to need to play one of our best games if we were going to be there in the end.”

Things started out well for the Cowboys, but then got off track.

“We started the game up 8-2 then started to play reserved and scared,” Murphy said.

“Shiloh went on a run and we couldn’t answer on the offensive end.

“We scored two points in the second quarter. Can’t win many games like that.”

But the Cowboys came back in the second half, scoring about evenly with the 9th ranked Skyhawks, but just couldn’t make up the deficit.

“Defensively, we played very well again tonight,” Murphy said. “We did not give up many easy baskets. We made them earn their points.

“In the preseason, I preached defense, defense, defense. Even though we lost, our defense is coming along very nicely.”

Murphy also had praise for the Skyhawk team.

“Giving credit to Shiloh, they shot the ball very well,” he said “They hit almost every shot within seven feet of the hoop, whereas we missed too many easy shots within seven feet.”

Murphy sees what his team needs to finish on top more often.

“We need to learn how to finish around the hoop if we want to make some noise this season,” he said. “Shiloh’s defense was top notch like I expected it would be.

“Shiloh may have the best defense we will face all year. They are very disciplined and are always in the right spot.”
