Cowboys set new meet record in track opener

It didn’t take long for members of the Killdeer boys’ track team to make an impression for the 2013 season.

FARGO — It didn’t take long for members of the Killdeer boys’ track team to make an impression for the 2013 season.

During Saturday’s track meet at the NDSU field house, the 800-meter relay team not only captured the gold, they set a new meet record with a time of 1:36.39. The team consisted of Tucker Beck, Hunter Lincoln, Lewis Dobitz and Trenton Rohr.

The record-setting, gold-capturing performance was just one of several shining moments for the Cowboys en route to a third place team finish with 53 points. Beck also captured the silver medal in the long jump, clearing 20-3.

Beck also placed third in the 400-meter dash, finishing in a time of 55.77 as did the 3200-meter relay squad of Lincoln, Cody Johnson, Jon Mossett and Christian Hernandez with a time of 10:02.37.

Mosset and Johnson teamed with Shad Musick and Dillon Calkins to place fourth in the 1600-meter relay, finishing in 4:17.36.

Dobitz, Lincoln and Mossett also earned fifth-place finishes in individual competition. Dobitz accomplished the task in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.06; Lincoln finished the 800-meter run in 2:16.77; and Mossett finished the 1600-meter run in 5:23.26.

While the Cowgirls didn’t set any meet records, they turned in a solid performance as well, placing eighth overall with 24 points.

Amber Kukla had the highest placing for the Cowgirls, capturing the silver medal in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:37.65.

Kukla was also a member of the 1600-meter relay, which captured the bronze medal. Joining Kukla in the relay were Angel Calkins, Jurnee Murray an Brooke Fettig. They finished the race in 4:48.20.

Calkins was also a member of the 800-meter relay, which placed fourth with a time of 2:00.71. Also on the squad were Kallisha Keller, Rylee Clark and Kasey Houghton.

Killdeer had three individuals place sixth in individual contests. They were Rylee Clark in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing in 11.62. Dobitz finished the 60-meter dash in 7.59. Trenton Rohr finished the 400-meter dash in 56.60.

Also placing for Killdeer was Keller, who captured seventh in the long jump at 14-2.

Twenty-two schools competed at the meet.

The next meet for Killdeer is scheduled for April 1 in Minot.
