Cowboys show great defense in win

The Killdeer Cowboys boys basketball team showed some great defense last Thursday (Jan. 9) in a game against Watford City, winning 54 – 39.Posted 1/17/14

“We came out with intensity on defense,” Head Coach Andy Murphy said. “It was one of the best defensive games of the season.”

The Cowboys knew going into the game they’d need a great defensive showing.

“Watford City has a stud, David Kline, who is a great athlete,” Murphy said. “He’s quick, he can shoot, and he can jump. He was our main point on defense.”

That strategy worked perfectly for the Cowboys.

“We totally denied him the entire game,” Murphy said. “Sean Tuhy, Lewis Dobitz,

and Trenton Rohr did a great job defending him.”

The Cowboys held Kline to just nine points during the game.

Murphy had a good offensive strategy too, and parts of it looked very good, some needs more work.

“On offense, we knew that their posts were bigger than us but we were

quicker than them,” Murphy said. “We fed the ball to the post most of the game. Hayes

LeMieux and Bubba Roshau stepped up down low for us.

“We need to improve on taking care of the ball. We had a lot of turnovers again, 23 to be exact.”

And the team ran into foul trouble early, but other players rose to the occasion to help insure the win.

“We ran into foul trouble,” Murphy said. “Several key players had multiple fouls in the

first half so we had to go deep into our bench.

“Our bench stepped up, and we will need them the rest of the year.”
