Fair Facts and More Dunn County Fair Events to Enjoy

Have you ever wondered about the history of county fairs?

I have and was extremely surprised at how long the fairs have existed in the world.

The story of mankind is filled with references to fairs. Centuries of historical connection to the eastern Mediterranean before the birth of Christ contain some sort of reference to fairs and festivals.

The Old and New Testament references to fairs are mentioned along with trade, the marketplace, festivals, religious feasts and holy days.  Evidence points to the existence of fairs as early as 500 BC. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, almost every state in the US had at least one or more agricultural fair.

Today, competition for the best agricultural and domestic products in Dunn County is an annual celebration for the community to come together, to share and to enjoy our neighbors.

Consider this YOUR  invitation to take part in the 2016 Dunn County Fair and 4-H Achievement Days. The 4-H and Open Class Exhibits will be in the High Plains Cultural Center on Tuesday, August 9, from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm, the Dunn County Fair personal will be taking entries for open class and the quilt show.   We have a special collection of artwork created by local people being entered in this year’s fair.  As an entrant you would be able to provide art work for competition as well as pleasure for the viewers.  Darice Taylor, a well-known south west North Dakota artist will be judging the art.

If you enjoy any form of photography; oil painting; acrylic paintings; water color paintings; drawings; three-dimensional (sculpture) please consider sharing your talent with us.  Young children are encouraged to enter along with students and adults.  No one is too young or too old to share your art expressions.

We do encourage you to bring your art “ready to hang” as that is the only way we are able to arrange the artwork on the art standards for display.

If proper hanging equipment is not attached, the artwork will be displayed lying flat on a table.  All entries must be marked on reverse side with artist name, address, title of work.  If there is no category in which to place your art piece, please bring it with you so that we can try to  find a suitable class and lot.

Saturday August 13, the Craft and Vendor Show along with the Dunn County Cruiser Car Show will be held at the High Plains Cultural Center beginning at 10:00 am along with the 5K Fun Run/Walk.

For more information, interested persons can call Dan at 701-870-2766 to pre-register for the 5K)
