Gilbert F. Scheeler, 88, Dickinson, died Monday, February 15, 2016 at St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson.
Gilbert’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, February 20, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Dickinson, with Fr. Keith Streifel as the celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Dickinson Honors Team. Visitation will be on Friday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson. There will be a rosary & vigil at 7 p.m., Friday, with Deacon Ralph Stockert presiding.
Gilbert was born September 13, 1927 in Stark County of North Dakota, the son of Joe J. and Rose (Flink) Scheeler. The family later moved to the Emerson community, east of manning, where he attended country school. At age 18, he was drafted into the United States Army. Gil served honorably from April 1, 1946 to October 2, 1947, in Korea with the motor pool in Puson.
Gilbert was united in marriage to Josephine Fettig on November 8, 1949 at Dodge, and making their home in Dickinson. He began working for Midwest Motors in August of 1950, where he was employed for the next 33 plus years. Following retirement, he worked for “The Walrus Waterbed Store”, and “Jerry’s Furniture”. He called those his fun jobs, retiring in 2002.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, St. Anthony Club, and was a Golden Eagle. He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing, calling coyotes, woodworking, building the family home, a snowmobile trailer, and a small camper.
Gilbert is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jo; two children, Danette (Jerry) Gayda, Dickinson, and Carol Jean Pachinger, Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter-in-law, Ronda Scheeler, Abilene, Texas; eight grandchildren, Tyler (Andi) Scheeler, Koleah Gayda, Logan Scheeler, Michael Gayda, Miranda (Rowdy) Lund, Kirby Scheeler, Joey Guanci, and Carlie Pachinger; two great-grandchildren, Brayden and Cleo Beth Scheeler; sister, Lorraine (Joe) Heidecker, Dickinson; brothers, Ted (Georgia) Scheeler, Bozeman, Mont., and Richard (Evie) Scheeler, Tucson, Ariz.; sisters-in-law, Ellen Scheeler, Miles City, Mont., and Joyce Scheeler, Dickinson; and numerous wonderful nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Cheryl; son, Dan; in-laws, Peter and Helen Fettig; sisters, Hanna (Frank) Heidecker, and Angeline (William) Heidecker; and brothers, Ray and Ed.
