U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp announced more than $178,000 in federal funding to support tribal education.
“Math skills are vital for putting students on the path to success, and this funding will help make sure programs to boost math skills in tribal communities are having an impact,” said Heitkamp. “Encouraging math, science, and technology learning in tribal communities helps build up Indian Country and prepares the next generation for good-paying jobs.”
The federal funding will support an 18-month planning project that will gather information to study the impacts that the Sunday Academy Model – a National Science Foundation-funded outreach project in tribal communities – has had on math learning in Native communities.
The funding was made available through the National Science Foundation’s Tribal Colleges and Universities Program (TCUP). Sunday Academy is a collaborative, culturally sensitive STEM learning outreach model that from 2001 to 2015 was partially supported by TCUP.
