Two of rodeo’s biggest champions, Wayne Herman and Brad Gjermundson, will appear together on Special Cowboy Moments, the western history related television show airing on Saturdays at 5 p.m. CDT and Sundays at 6 a.m. CDT on NBC.
Wayne Herman participated in the National Final Rodeo, the Super Bowl of rodeo, 11 times during his career and always finished near the top, finally making it to the top when he won the PRCA Bareback Riding World Championship in 1992.
Brad Gjermundson’s career shot to the top in saddle bronc riding almost immediately, when he quickly won four PRCA World Titles in the early 80s. Both grew up nearby and went to school in Halliday.
“I started riding saddle broncs in 1976,” Gjermundson said, “and by 1981 I was a world champion.”
Special Cowboy Moments is a half hour weekly television show on NBC that focuses on North Dakota western history.
In this first of a two-part episode, Herman and Gjermundson talk about going from growing up in very rural settings to sitting on top of the rodeo world and receiving congratulatory telegrams from prominent political figures such as, in the case of Gjermundson, President Ronald Reagan.
“The stories these two guys tell of life behind-the-scenes in big time rodeo are very compelling,” said Kevin Holten, who, along with Ken Howie Studios, is the producer of the show. “And yet, what is even more compelling is watching Wayne and Brad share that history together. I’ve witnessed their chemistry many times before and I wanted to capture it to preserve for all time. It’s very fun to watch.”
“I wouldn’t have wanted to be the horse that Wayne Herman was riding,” Gjermundson said when he talked about who he thought was the best bareback bronc rider of that era, “because when he set his feet, he did it with a purpose.”
Special Cowboy Moments is a weekly half hour “living history” television series produced by the North Dakota Cowboy Association and Ken Howie Studios. The show features an interview format combined with interesting photography and video footage.
It airs on NBC affiliates in Bismarck, Dickinson, Williston and Minot. This episode is sponsored by the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation.
