Killdeer area comes out to support stricken youth

December 7 was a great night in Killdeer. The weather was extremely cold, the roads were a mess, and it was still a great night.

That night, the larger Killdeer community came together to support a young man whose family ranches east of town. Logan Kostelecky is fighting cancer and organizers wanted to use the proceeds from the Killdeer Buck Contest and Auction to support the Kostelecky family.

“This went beyond my expectations,” event organizer Wendell Vigen said. “I can’t believe how many people in the community stepped up to donate time and goods and how many came to the buck contest and auction. It really went well.”

Earlier, Vigen had reminded residents that “Tis the season to be generous.” They came, and they were.

Surprise guest of the evening was Logan Kostelecky himself, who showed up to see old friends and family. He surely made some new friends that night also.

The Buck Contest was well represented, with some great horns for guests to view and discuss.

Top Mule Deer racks were: Ross Carson, 193 3/8 pts; Shalee Dozal, 180 5/8 pts; Ron Carson, 178 5/8 pts; Tristan Lee, 178 4/8 pts; Bob Larson, 168 0/8 pts; and Darren Basaraba, 158 4/8 pts.

Top Whitetail racks were: Josh Penningtopn, 160 4/8 pts; Hayden Kessler, 160 2/8 pts; Allan Beregon, 154 pts; Marlin Rohde, 152 3/8 pts; John Linseth 137 2/8 pts; and Linda Vigen, 119 5/8 pts.

But the big news of the evening wasn’t the number of large deer horns entered; it was the local people digging deep to support a family in time of need.

Many large items were donated including a huge mounted elk rack, a custom-made gun cabinet, a hand made gun rack, a hand made bench, a riding John Deere electric kids tractor and cart, artwork, a bull hide, many pistols and rifles and many more items.

Those items themselves would have tallied an impressive amount of money, but time and time again residents upped the ante and bid the totals higher than the retail worth of the item.

They weren’t uninformed bidders, they were neighbors helping neighbors.

The end result – a very good auction with a large amount of money raised for Logan Kostelecky.
