LEONARD FRIEDT was born on August 25, 1930 in Mott, ND to Rockus and Katherine (Messer) Friedt, the oldest of four children. He lived and grew up on the family farm 14 miles north of Mott. He attended country school through the 8th grade and then continued to live on the farm to help his dad.
Dad met Inez Bergenheier (who he described as the prettiest girl he had ever seen), at the Halfway, which was a dance hall halfway between Mott and Richardton. They were married on November 6, 1951 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Richardton, ND. He purchased the family farm from his parents in 1954 when Grandpa and Grandma moved into Mott. Together, Dad and Mom worked the farm and raised their seven children.
Dad was a believer in “you had to work hard to get somewhere in life.” Mom and Dad bought their groceries with the money from the cream and eggs they sold to the Mott Creamery. They raised chickens, pigs, cows, horses, and even at times, had a few ducks, geese, and sheep.
He was very active in different organizations. He was a member of the St. Placidus Catholic Church and served on their Church Council. When St. Placidus closed, he became a member of St. Vincent’s Catholic Church in Mott. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, served on the Mott Fire Protection District for 32 years, the Mott Equity Exchange Board of Directors for 28 years, and was the Campbell Township Clerk and Treasurer for 28 years. Dad overhauled most of his own machinery and was a good welder. That must be why two of his sons went into welding after high school.
Dad and Mom retired and moved into town in 1997. They enjoyed doing woodworking projects together until Mom entered the nursing home in 2006. While she was in the nursing home, Dad would go to see her every day, except those days when he was sick or in the hospital. Mom passed away on Dad’s 80th birthday in 2010, after which Dad continued to live in his house and take care of himself. He was admitted to the hospital on Christmas Day in 2015, and from there went to St. Luke’s Nursing Home in Dickinson where he passed from this life on the morning of February 8, 2016.
Leonard is survived by his children: Kathy (Ray) Fries, Mandan, ND; Shirley Kubas, Dickinson, ND; Sandy (John) Bubbers, Morristown, SD; Larry (Brenda) Friedt, New Leipzig, ND; Terry (Diane) Friedt, Mott, ND; Garry ( Shelley), Friedt, Cavalier, ND; Cindy (Scott) Bice, Killdeer, ND; 23 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 4 sisters-in-law, Diane (Otto) Vetter, Mott, ND, Helen Bleth, Dickinson, ND; Agnes (Lester) Voegele, Billings, MT; and Ann Bergenheier, Dickinson, ND. He is also survived by his special friends, Bill and Pat Friedt, and Joe and Corrine Friedt, all of Mott, ND.
