RIDING TO VICTORY: Killdeer High School rodeo this weekend

Several Killdeer High School students are preparing their spurs and practicing their techniques as the annual Killdeer High School Rodeo begins Sunday.

Several Killdeer High School students are preparing their spurs and practicing their techniques as the annual Killdeer High School Rodeo begins Sunday.

The 49th annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Killdeer rodeo grounds.

Judges for the event include Lyle Gjermundson, Howard Larson and Dan Frank. For the 2013 event, stock includes horses and bulls from Kling Rodeo, bull fighters Bronc Ladue and Jalen Ladue and pick up men Joe Blakenship and Wally Blakenship.

A RECAP OF 2012 RODEO

Logan Schaper of Halliday won the boys all-around at the Killdeer High School Rodeo last year.

Schaper placed second in steer wrestling, third in team roping – with header Tate Harris – and third in cow cutting.

Schaper edged another Halliday cowboy for the top spot as Jake Herman tallied 21 points. Schaper finished with 25 points.

Winning the girls all-around was Chantel Fettig of Kintyre with 24 points. Samantha Jorgenson of Watford City placed second with 19 points. Colby Hanson of Jamestown and Lexus Kelsch of McLaughlin, S.D. tied for third with 18 points.

Another Schaper also had a strong showing at the Killdeer rodeo as Skye Schaper won the breakaway roping in 3.71 seconds. Calby Hanson of Jamestown placed second in the event at 3.8. Ashley Brew of Manning was fourth at 3.93.

Golden Valley’s Coleman Entzez won the bull riding with a score of 75.

Dalton Rixen of Richardton won the saddle broc riding with a score of 75.

The Killdeer Rodeo is a North Dakota High School Rodeo Association event.
