HALLIDAY – The aroma from Harvey Schmitz was undeniable. And his hot breakfast of eggs and hash browns looked like a feast fit for a king.

He talked with friends as he made quick work of his breakfast at Jodeo’s Restaurant.
He took a sip of his steaming coffee and smiled.
Good friends. Good food. Good combination.
And it’s because of the Café 60 initiative, a restaurant voucher program aimed at those who are 60 years and older.
The core purpose of the program, initially started by Elder Care, is to encourage participants to get out of the house. Those utilizing the Café 60 program are encouraged to head down to the nearest participating restaurant, where they are able to enjoy a delightful meal, while interacting with other Café 60 participants.
According to Elder Care, a great perk of the program is that participants get to select their meal from an array of tasty items on the Café 60 menus. The program gives participants access to a specialized, yet diverse menu at participating restaurants.
The program has been incorporated into the menus of five participating restaurants throughout the Southwest region of the state.
Jodeo’s Restaurant offers a variety of nutritious meal options on its Café 60 menu.
Jodeo’s owner Jody Saari said it’s essential to provide participants of the program with a well-balanced meal. In addition, she views the program as an important tool in encouraging the participants to get out and socialize.
Jodeo’s has 22 participants utilizing the program, and for many of these participants a meal at the diner has become part of their daily routine.
Schmitz said “most people who utilize the program come to the diner to get a meal and to hang out and socialize for a bit, and then they go and get their mail at the post office before heading home.”
Harvey, like many of the other participants, utilizes the program for the delicious food, and for the social interaction the program brings with it.
Members of the community interested in joining the Café 60 program can call Elder Care at 701 456-1818.
In addition to Jodeo’s, the other restaurants in the program include: Buzzy Café in Beach; Hawks Point Restaurant in Dickinson; Jabr’s Family Restaurant in Bowman; and Four Corner’s Café in Fairfield.
