On July 24, 2014 at approximately 2:30 pm, the Sheriff’s Department was notified of a possible phone scam. A Dunn County resident received a phone call by an individual claiming to be Steven WILLIAMS from the Internal Revenue Service. WILLIAMS told the reporting party that he owned the IRS $8,000 in back taxes and there was a warrant out for his arrest. WILLIAMS went on to say that the reporting party could pay the amount off over the phone by using a credit card. The reporting party found the conversation odd and stated to WILLIAMS “send the sheriff out to get me for the warrant then”. The reporting party stated that WILLIAMS hung up the phone after he made mention of the Sheriff. Citizens are reminded to beware of any phone calls where they are asked to give personal or financial information over the telephone. Citizens should attempt to get the caller to give them their contact information, tell them they will be called back, and immediately call dispatch with the information.
