Late last month, SpartanNash purchased the two Dan’s Supermarkets in Dickinson, and announced they will remodel those two, plus add a third brand new market in Dickinson.

SpartanNash describes these purchases as expanding its presence in “one of the fastest growing regional markets in the United States.”
What this will mean to local shoppers though, is more choices in where to shop.
The new store will be constructed on 10 acres in the West Ridge Development, near the Minards, which will soon be opening.
The new store will be approximately 55,000 square feet, break ground next spring and be completed in late 2014. It will also contain a 12-bay fuel center, a 4,000-foot convenience store, and an attached liquor store, pending creation of an additional liquor license by the City of Dickinson.
According to SpartanNash, every department of the new supermarket will present a selection of offerings including:
• Fresh produce presentation with a variety of fruits and vegetables from around the world
• “Welcome Center” offering complimentary coffee and popcorn to consumers
• Fresh bakery featuring fresh made breads, cakes and pastries.
• Fresh floral display with bouquets, arrangements and roses
• Fresh meat and seafood
• Expansive service deli and Fresh Food to Go
In addition to a full supermarket variety and selection, the store will offer Savings Zones, Baskets of Values, hundreds of weekly ad specials, and special offers to help stretch a consumer’s weekly food budget.
Dan’s Supermarket says, “It is expected that both locations will continue to operate and that many of the familiar faces that you have come to know working for Dan’s will still be seen in the stores.”
And if the name SpartanNash sounds vaguely familiar – it should. The name comes after Spartan Stores purchased the Nash Finch Co. SpartanNash (SPTN) is a Fortune 500 company and the largest food distributor serving military commissaries and exchanges in the United States, in terms of revenue.
SpartanNash currently operates 177 supermarkets, primarily under the banners of Family Fare Supermarkets, No Frills, Bag ‘n Save and Econofoods.
The Company’s core businesses include distributing food to military commissaries and exchanges and independent and corporate-owned retail stores located in 44 states and the District of Columbia, Europe, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Azores, Bahrain and Egypt.
Dan’s SuperMarket, based in Bismarck, bought the downtown location in 1980 and built Dan’s SuperMarket North in 1982, then named Dan’s Country Market. There are three Dan’s locations in Bismark and one in Mandan.
