To increase seat belt use, law enforcement agencies throughout the state will be conducting overtime enforcement of seat belt laws during a statewide Click It or Ticket campaign, which will run May 20, through June 2.

The campaign is funded through the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT).

After months of contending with wintry weather, things are starting to warm up in North Dakota. Between the lake and little league, camping weekends and cross-country treks, North Dakotans spend a lot of time behind the wheel in the spring and summer months, and law enforcement are hoping to get motorists to warm up to a simple idea: buckle your seat belt each and every time you get in a vehicle.

“The increased enforcement period isn’t about issuing tickets,” said Mark Nelson, NDDOT Safety Director. “It’s about reminding motorists that buckling up is the most effective way to protect yourself in a crash. It’s about saving lives.”

Last year, 65 percent of traffic fatalities in North Dakota were unbelted.

“Whether you’re heading out on a cross-country road trip or just up the road,” Nelson said. “Buckling your seat belt is the easiest way to protect the lives of yourself and your passengers in the event of a crash.”
