TRACK: Killdeer runs to place second, third in CNDC meet

April Fool’s Day was no joke for the Killdeer High School track squads as the Cowboys and Cowgirls returned home in second and third place, respectively, from the CNDC Indoor Meet at the Minot State Campus.

MINOT — April Fool’s Day was no joke for the Killdeer High School track squads as the Cowboys and Cowgirls returned home in second and third place, respectively, from the CNDC Indoor Meet at the Minot State Campus.

With 12 teams competing, the Cowboys tallied 107 points while the Cowgirls finished with 54 points.

And for the Cowboys, another record fell as the combined teams won the gold in six different events.

The Cowboys won a pair of relays. The 1600-meter relay team of Tucker Beck, Trenton Rohr, Jon Mossett and Hunter Lincoln won the gold in 3:55.01. The 4-by-1 lap team of Beck, Rohr, Jake Benson and Lincoln also captured the gold, but set a new meet record, finishing in a time of 1:16.35.

Beck and Lincoln also captured gold medals in individual competition. Lincoln was the first to cross the finish line in the 800-meter run, finishing in 2:11.87. Beck had the longest leap in the long jump, clearing 19-10.

Hayes LeMieux won the gold in the high jump, clearing 5-8 while Amber Kukla took top honors in the girls’ 800-meter run, completing the race in 2:38.94.

Benson won a pair of silver medals in individual events, placing second in the 55-meter hurdles (8.67 seconds) and second in the long jump (19-8 ½).

Mossett’s time of 5:22.07 in the 1600-meter run also netted to his medal collection on the day with a silver.

Rylee Clarke and Angel Calkins teamed on a pair of relays to win silver medals. The two were joined by Lexi Clarke and Kukla on the 1600-meter relay and finished the race in 4:43.83. Rylee Clarke and Calkins were joined by Kallisha Keller and Kasey Houghton to place second in the 4-by-1 lap relay, finishing in 1:33.02.

The squads returned home with plenty of bronze medals as well. Kallisha Keller placed third in the pole vault, clearing 7-6. Beck placed third in the 55-meter dash, finishing in 6.87, and Caleb Musick placed third as well, finishing the 200-meter dash in 25.77. The Cowboys’ second entry in the 4-by-1 lap relay, consisting of Musick, Shad Musick, Lane Gaugler and Cristian Hernandez was the second team to cross the finish line (1:24.11).

Killdeer had a pair of fourth-place finishers in Hannah Balderas in the shot put (31-0) and Rohr in the 55-meter dash (6.88).

The lone Killdeer athlete placing fifth at the meet was Jocelyn Walker, who cleared 6-6 in the pole vault.

Five athletes placed sixth at the meet. They were Rylee Clarke in the 55 hurdles (10.22), Jurnee Murray in the 400 dash (1:13.16), Keller in the long jump (14-11 ½), Cody Johnson in the 800-meter run (2:27.62) and Hernandez in the 55 hurdles (9.81).

Brooke Fettig placed seventh in the 800-meter run, finishing in 2:48.11. Johnson and Lincoln also placed seventh with Johnson finishing the 400-meter dash in 1:01.87 and Lincoln clearing 17-9 ¾ in the long jump.

Murray placed eighth in the 55 hurdles with a time of 10.75. Keller was also eighth in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.85. Lane Gaugler was eighth in the shot put, throwing for 37-9 ½.
