Andersen leads Cowboys at state tourney

Killdeer took 10 wrestlers to the state tournament over the weekend, but it was Zach Andersen who grabbed the top finish – fourth.

Curtis Hall finished fifth at 285 pounds and Gus Bohmbach took sixth in the 106-pound competition. Dylan Tabor added a seventh place to the Killdeer total in the 138-pound competition.

Andersen started off the tournament with a win by fall over Velva’s Brayden Selzler (2:49), then added a victory by a 13-10 decision over Ethan Carnuth of Ellendale-Edgeley-Kulm) in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinal match, Andersen lost by fall (4:18) to the eventual state champion, Nathan Weigel of Napoleon/G-S.

Anderson bounced back with a major decision (15-5) win over Hillsboro/Central Valley’s Gavin Wright in the consolation semifinals.

The third place match was a rematch with Carnuth, only this time it wasn’t Andersen getting the 12-9 decision.

Hall started off with wins by fall over Jack Wilhelmi of Stanley (1:32) and Kutter Blumhagen of Velva (:47), but he ran into the eventual state champion in the semifinals.

Riley Molter of South Border won by fall over Hall (4:37) to knock the Killdeer wrestler into the consolation bracket. Hall lost the consolation semifinal to Andrew Miller of Napoleon/G-S by fall (3:16), to put Hall in the fifth place match.

Hall came back with a win by fall (2:33) over Keegan Henjum of Bishop Ryan to grab the fifth spot.

Bohmbach grabbed a sixth-place finish in the state tournament. He started off with a win by fall over Elizabeth Massine of Velva (5:32) but then was knocked into the consolation bracket with a loss to Marshall Lindgren of South Border.

Lindgren got a major decision over Bohmbach (16-8).

In the consolation round, Bohmbach opened with a 11-4 decision over Peyton Tuhy of Hettinger-Scranton, then added an 8-1 decision over Cole Gerhardt of New Salem/Almont.

In the consolation semifinals, it was Trevor Hinkle of Pembina County North who won an 8-2 decision which pushed Bohmbach into the fifth place match.

In the battle for fifth, it was Carrington’s Matthew Duchscherer who picked up the 4-0 decision over Bohmbach.

Tabor started off with a win by fall (2:28) over Stanley’s Keyton Meiers, but lost in the quarterfinal by fall (1:46) to Kindred’s Brock Roesler.

Tabor came back with a win by fall over Junior Totay from Central Cass (4:44) before losing to Hettinger-Scranton’s Carlos Martinez by a 9-5 decision.

In the seventh-place match, Tabor pulled out a win by fall (5:00) over Ethan Hammons of New Salem/Almont.

Team finishes 16th

As a team, Killdeer placed 16th in the standings with a total of 53 points.

Lisbon won the team title with 177 points, followed by New Salem-Almont (151), Central Cass (114), South Border (113) and Carrington 106.5).

Bowman County was sixth with 103 points, followed by Hillsboro-Central Valley (seventh, 96.5), Napoleon/G-S (eighth, 96), Oakes (ninth, 78) and Hettinger-Scranton (tenth, 71).
