Shawnee Hansen won a big race during Friday’s Regional Track Championships in Bowman.
But she was not on the track.
The senior who is graduating Memorial Day weekend from Killdeer was named as athlete of the year for the region.
The Killdeer sprint specialist has the second fastest 100 meter time in the region with her time of 12.93 seconds only behind Masy Kuntz of Trinity, her longtime rival (12.84). Hansen is one of just three local sprinters to break 13 seconds in the 100 meters this season.
In four races at 100 meters this season, Hansen has a perfect record of four firsts.
She has surpassed that at 200 meters, were she is undefeated in six races.
Hansen also has the fastest 200 meter time in the region (26.61 seconds) almost four-tenths of a second ahead of Kuntz (27.00 seconds).
She had wins at the Bison-Miner Classic April 16 with a time of 27.52 seconds. At her first home meet of the season April 25, she dropped her time to 27.11 seconds. After a 27.15 time in the Badlands Conference meet, she dropped under 27 seconds.
First, she hit 26.74 seconds at the Shiloh-Hunter Seifert Memorial meet May 4 , then dropped it to 26.61 seconds at the Hollinger Classic in Bownman May 11.
She nearly matched that time with a 26.64 at the Last Chance meet in Dickinson May 14.
In the 400 meters, Hansen started the season with a 1:0722 clocking in the Badlands Conference meet, placing fifth.
She placed fifth again two days later with a faster 1:02.82 effort.
In the Town Crier meet in Killdeer she was first with a 1:02.14 time, but at the Last Chance meet she settled for a second place with her best time of the season, 1:00.33 seconds.
Hansen has helped the Cowboys in the relays, with the quartet getting a 52.23 time in the 4×100 meter relay at the Town Crier meet in Killdeer. In the same meet, she anchored Killdeer’s 4×200 relay and helped them get a 1:50.43 time.
Hansen has yet to beat her person records this season.
As a freshman, she set her 200 meter mark with a 26.46 effort and broke the minute mark for the 400 meters (59.31 seconds.
Hansen set her 100 meter best as junior when she finished with a 12.81 seconds.
Hansen and her teammate will compete in the state championship meet in Bismarck which starts Friday and concludes Saturday.
Still, she has the fastest 400 meter time this season in the region and the fastest 200 meter time this season.
