Staff Report
Hettinger-Scranton handed the host Killdeer Cowboys a two-set (25-20, 25-17) defeat Saturday in the semifinals, but that was the warmup.
Unfortunately for the Night Hawks, even jumping out to a 25-19 win in the title match wasn’t enough to keep the Heart River Cougars from roaring back to take the tournament title – thanks to 26-24 and 15-13 wins.
In earlier pool play, Hettinger-Scranton had handed the Cougars two straight losses (21-17 and 21-12) and had built up an undefeated record.
But the two losses meant the Night Hawks would only finish second in the tournament.
Killdeer started the day with a two set win over Glen Ullin/Hebron (21-10 and 21-17) before splitting two sets with Beach.
The Cowboys lost the first set (22-20), then came back for a 21-17 win.
Killdeer also split with Grant County/Flasher, with the Storm winning the first (17-21) before the Cowboys took the second (21-18).

Senior Megan Olson saves the ball during a battle with Beach in the Killdeer Mountain volleyball tournament Aug. 31 in Killdeer.
