The Dickinson Trinity-New England Titans hosted the Cowboys from Killdeer Aug. 24 in a non-conference matchup at the beautiful Badlands Activities Center. The temperature was in the low 90’s at game time but, the cool front was moving in creating a strong north wind. With the football field lying north to south, it created a challenge moving the ball to the north end of the field.

The Titans had prepared themselves for an ever-powerful Cowboy football team, but two quick scores off of turnovers ‘fired up’ the Titans and frustrated the Cowboys. The Cowboys first offensive series resulted in a fumble which the Titans recovered. Quickly a pass from Senior Quarterback Ben Gordon to Jacob Good for 16 yards and a touchdown with 10:58 showing on the clock. Brendin Steiner’s kick for the extra point failed. The ensuing kickoff once again sailed through the endzone with the wind aiding its flight. Killdeer’s second series began with a rush for six yards and the ‘False Start’ penalty took the ball to the 16 yard line. Senior Quarterback Christian Kulish’s handoff to Sophomore Lewis Dobitz was fumbled and fumbled and fumbled until a Titan covered the ball on the 13 yard line. Gordon gave the handoff to fellow Senior Brendin Stiener for four yards who was tackled by Cowboy Sophomore Linebacker John Knopik. A short two minutes later, Gordon hooked up with Isiah Binstock with a touchdown pass from 11 yards out. Steiner’s kick was good and Trinity held a 13-0 lead.

Cowboy Sophomore Trenton Rohr took the kickoff to the 35 yard line. Rohr took the handoff up the middle for no gain as he was stopped by Senior Linebacker Cody Heiser. Kulish called his own number and managed maybe a yard on a keeper and the Cowboys were facing a fourth and six. The punt into the nasty wind went out of bounds at the 49 yard line.

Trinity once again went on offense with Steiner carrying for maybe a yard before being stopped by Junior Matt Kukla. Steiner for five yards. Facing a third and four, Gordon threw a beautiful spiral to Binstock, but it was broken up as Rohr knocked it away. The Titans managed a first down befor being stopped by Senior Lineman Brock Pittsley. Gordon tried a keeper and was thrown for a loss, Steiner for three up the middle and with a third and 21, Gordon aired it out to Good, just over his head incomplete and the Titans were forced to punt. A touchback was called and Killdeer, once again, took over at the 20 yard line. Dobitz took the ball up the middle for five yards, Kulish ran a ‘Keeper’ for a loss of two and then another for the first first down for the Cowboys. Killdeer was whistled for another ‘Motion’ penalty. Sophomore Tanner Rohde picked up a first down, another penalty and Kulish found Junior Calum Blankenship for 15 yards. Kulish gained ten on a keeper around the right side and the buzzer signalled the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter quickly and quietly progressed without either team able to put together a successful drive. The Titans went on offense with 1:44 remaining in the first half. Gordon found Good for nine yards, long pass incomplete, rush for nothing and another incomplete pass. With the wind increasing, Killdeer took over on downs at 1:22. Titan Senior Alex Nielsen sacked Kulish for a loss and Killdeer Head Coach Lou Dobitz called a time out. Another ‘False Start’ penalty was called on the Cowboys, a pass fell incomplete and then another. The snap to the punter was bobbled, but he did get it off and the ball rolled out at the 12 yard line. Kulish took ‘A Knee’ to end the first half.

Early in the third quarter Steiner broke free for a 70 yard touchdown scamper and then he missed the extra point. Binstock hauled in a 15 yard pass for a Titan touchdown and Steiner’s kick was good. Steiner rushed for a 30 yard touchdown to close out the scoring for the game. The kick was no good.

The closest the Cowboys came to scoring happened in the third quarter when Sophomore Trenton Rohr scampered 53 yards to the Titan three yard line. Trinity was bent, but they didn’t break. The defense held tight which was highlighted by Trinity Sophomore’s Jacob Brooke sack of Kulish for a 12 yard loss.

Trenton Rohr had 18 rushes for 98 yards, Riley Rohde rushed nine times for 32 yards, Kulish completed seven of 18 passing attempts and Rohr was Killdeer’s leading receivers with three catches for 41 yards. Rushers for the Titans were led by Brendin Steiner with 10-125, Mason Heth 4-32, Ben Gordon 7-27, Travis Heidt 1-4 and Lane Herberholz 1-3. Gordon passed for 88 yards completing eight of 18 and Isiah Binstock was his favorite target with four catches and 43 yards, Jacob Good two grabs for 25 yards, Brendin Steiner one catch for 18 yards and Lane Herberholz with one catch for two yards. The Titans travel to Valley City Aug. 31 and Killdeer plays host to Standing Rock.
